Maybe ethics bills are just the start?
At least it looks like the legislature can come together on a few things in Montgomery.

There are plenty of senators signed on to Gov. Riley's ethics bills calling for full reporting of lobbyist expenditures and a ban on money transfers from Political Action Committees.

The rubber won't hit the road until the legislature actually votes on the matter. Here's hoping they have enough guts to actually do it.

Of course, these two bills alone won't cure all the ills in Montgomery, but they're a start. We'd like to see more ethics reform take on the rule of law.

We need to realize that Alabama is not an island. We are competing in a global marketplace. The time for backroom deals and petty bickering is long over.

We are hopeful that the ethics bills will be just the start. Maybe, just maybe, constitutional reform will follow.

There's a lot of work and that needs to be done and can be done. A lot of that work is going on at the county and city level. Our legislature should be there to help us not hinder us. The same for the constitution. It's long past time we had county home rule. One can always hope for the future.
