Lady Tigers off to a rough start in 2007 The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger softball teams, both varsity and junior varsity participated in the Baker High School invitational tournament in Mobile this past Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. Although they represented themselves very well at times and got some valuable experience overall, neither team came out on the top of the ledger with the JV finishing 1 and 3 and the varsity ending up 0 and 4. In the varsity action the Lady Tigers tangled with 6A Foley and 6A Baker on Friday losing to the Lady Lions 4-3 and to the Lady Hornets 11 -2. The game with Foley was somewhat unusual in that all the scoring by both teams took place in the first two innings of the game with the Lady Tigers plating two in the first and one in the second while the Lady Lions got two in both. Dominique Watters, who fell to 2 and I with the loss, went the distance on the mound for Thomasville allowing four runs on eight hits, four walks, and two hit batsmen while striking out four in seven innings. On offense Thomasville had nine hits of their own led by Savannah Smith with three and Cassie Flint with two. Joining them with one hit each were teammates Ashley Crawford, Shaneka Nicholson, Macy Overton, and Dominique Watters. Nicholson, Smith and Watters were the only Lady Tigers with an extra-base hit with each of them recording a double. In the RBI category Watters led with two while Crawford had one. In the game with Baker, the Lady Hornets took a 5 - 1 lead after the first two innings and were never really threatened again on their way to a victory. Savannah Smith, who got the start on the mound for the Lady Tigers, was charged with the loss dropping her season mark to 2 and 3. In seven innings of work Smith gave up 11 runs on 10 hits, and two walks while striking out three. At the plate the Lady Tigers were pretty much stymied by the Lady Hornet pitcher picking up only one hit, a single by Ashley Crawford. Nicole Washington had the only RBI. On Saturday the Lady Tiger varsity played East Central out of Mississippi losing to them 7- 0 and 5A St. Pauls losing that one 3 - 1. Rachel Norris got the start on the mound for Thomasville against East Central and worked 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Dominique Watters for the final 4 1/3 innings of the game. Norris during her stint on the hill allowed four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one. Watters, finishing it up, gave up three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six. In her relief role she was tagged with the loss evening her record at 2 and 2. On offense the Lady Tigers could only muster three hits with Shelby Myers, Macy Overton and Savannah Smith each picking up one. In the game with St. Pauls the Lady Saints moved out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the game and shut off a Lady Tiger rally in the fifth to post the win. Savannah Smith pitched the entire game for Thomasville and was charged with the loss bringing her season total to 2 and 4. In her six innings of work she gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five. Meanwhile the Thomasville offense registered four hits with Shaneka Nicholson connecting on two while Nicole Washington and Dominique Watters each had one. Nicholson also had the Lady Tigers only RBI. In Junior Varsity action the Lady Tigers got a rude welcome to Mobile on Friday as they fell victim to 6A Alma Bryant in an 18-0 drubbing. Things got somewhat better on Saturday though as the Lady Tigers took on 6A Baker, 6A Murphy and East Central, Mississippi, recording one win and two losses. The Lady Tigers' lone win came against East Central, Mississippi with Thomasville coming out on top 9-5. Lindsey Overstreet pitched a complete game to pick up the win and move her season total to 2 and 3. In seven innings she gave up five runs on five hits and six walks while striking out four. At the plate, Taylor Gilchrist and Overstreet each had three hits in the game followed by Alexis Watters with two to lead Thomasville. Joining them on the Lady Tiger hit parade that recorded 14 hits were; Kaley MeManus, Sheyenne Myers, Natalie Washington, Shan Washington, Kierra Westbrook, and Rachel Wright with one hit each. Myers and Natalie Washington each had a double for Thomasville's only extrabase hits. In the RBI category Myers led the team with two followed by Gilclirist, Natalie Washington, Shan Washington, Watters and Wright with one apiece. In the game with Baker the Lady Hornets scored early and often on their way to a 12 - 2 win over the Lady Tigers. Alexis Watters and Kaley McManus split the mound duties for Thomasville in the game with Watters being charged with the loss. On offense Thomasville did manage to get five hits with Taylor Gilchrist, Sheyenne Myers, Lindsey Overstreet, Natalie Washington and Alexis Watters all recording one. Gilchrist with a double and Washington with a triple had extra-base hits for the Lady Tigers and Watters and Rachel Wright had the team's two RBIs. Rounding out the day, Murphy High School blew open a close ballgame in the bottom of the fourth to post a 13 -2 win over Thomasville. With the Lady Panthers ahead 3 -2 at the time, the girls from Mobile took advantage of some Thomasville miscues and some timely hitting to plate 10 runs and secure the win. Lindsey Overstreet, making her second pitching start of the day, was charged with the loss dropping her record to 2 and 4. In five innings of work she allowed 13 runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four. Offensively Thomasville got six hits in the game led by Overstreet with two hits including one double. Joining her with one hit each were Taylor Gilchrist, Natalie Washington, Alexis Watters and Rachel Wright. Wright also had the only RBI in the game for Thomasville.
