Clarke County United Way exceeds goal
By Jim Cox Co-Publisher

The Clarke County United Way Campaign for 2006 edged past its $150,000 goal with $150,752, according to Campaign Chairman Julia Ann Deas.

The local United Way held its annual meeting at the Grove Hill United Methodist Church March 20 -and recognized contributors for the year.

Clarke County United Way Chairman Richard Long, mayor of Jackson, complimented Deas, co-chairman Kate Jordan, Leann Floyd, Edwina Hart, Mae Carole Hill and Rita Wilson for their work.

Deas has served two years as campaign chairman and Long said she has done a wonderful job, joking that if he ever married again, he'd marry her.

Looked bleak in December

In December, the local fund stood at $143,941 and many wondered if the goal could be met. Long said Deas met the test. "She gets blood out of a turnip," he said.

This campaign was especially difficult for United Way. Some suggested that the heavy contributions as a result of Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina had taken their toll on giving. However, Clarke County came through with its giving.

Deas and Long both praised the Coffeeville area for their support of the program. Coffeeville High School was recognized for its contributions from students to a school campaign.

McDonald's and owner Bob and Michelle Orwig were also honored, as a first-time participant. Long said that more private businesses need to be encouraged to participate.

Help for 'personal hurricanes'

Deas, who chaired the campaign through two major hurricanes, again make reference to the "personal hurricanes" that so many people suffer and said that many of the social service agencies that United Way contributions support help those people get through tough times.

The Clarke County United Way is a part of the larger United Way of Southwest Alabama that also includes Mobile and Washington counties. Executive Director Angelo Miller said that the three counties raised more than $5.7 million during the 2006 campaign. United Way of America contributed another $1.7 million for hurricane relief efforts and other groups made contributions due to Hurricane Katrina too.

Mayor Long is stepping down as chairman and Deas will move into that position. Brian Leathers will be vice chairman; Dottie Fore, secretary; Rick Harvey, treasurer; and Linda Breedlove, board of trustees representative.

The important position of campaign chairman remains to be filled.
