The Sweet Water Bulldogs ended a productive week of baseball on Friday, March 30, with a 3-2 win over the Millry Wildcats in a game played in Sweet Water. With the win the Bulldogs improved their season record to 10-8 and more importantly their Area record to 3-0. The win over the Wildcats also locked up the Area 1 championship for the Bulldogs and assured them of a host spot in the first round of the State Playoffs.

In the game Drew Luker got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and responded with eight strong innings of pitching to claim the victory and even his season total at 3-3. In those innings he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out nine and had one stretch where he retired 13 straight batters.

While Luker and the Bulldog defense were holding the Wildcats in check, the Bulldog offense collected six hits led by Luker with two. Joining him with one hit in the game were; Heath Hill, Antonio Landrum, Tate Luker, and Scottie Nelson. There were no extra base hits and Drew Luker had the team's lone RBI.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, March 27, the Bulldogs traveled to Fruitdale and defeated the Pirates 10-7 in an Area 1 match up for both teams. It was this win over the Pirates preceded by a Sweet Water victory over Millry earlier in the season that made it possible for the Bulldogs to clinch the title with Friday's win over the Wildcats.

In the game Ty Glass started on the mound for Sweet Water and worked 5 1/3 innings to record the win and even his season mark at 3-3. During his stint on the mound he allowed seven runs on six hits, six walks, and two hit batsmen while striking out seven. Drew Luker pitched the final 1 2/3 innings blanking the Pirates while striking out three. For his efforts he was credited with a save.

At the plate the Bulldogs had five players including; Anthony Landrum, Antonio Landrum, Drew Luker, Scottie Nelson, and Henry Smith with two hits in the game while Ty Glass and Tate Luker added one apiece. Anthony Landrum led the team in extra base hits with two doubles followed by Glass, Drew Luker and Nelson with one two bagger each. In the RBI category Glass, Drew Luker and Tate Luker all two while Anthony Landrum, Antonio Landrum and Nelson had one.

Things continued for the Bulldogs on Thursday, March 29 when they hosted Southern Choctaw and Excel in a split double header. In the first game the Bulldogs got the best of the Indians from Southern Choctaw defeating them 13-3.

Antonio Landrum got the call on the mound for Sweet Water against Southern Choctaw and worked two innings in which he allowed one run on three hits, one walk and one hit batsman while striking out three. He was followed by Tate Luker who also pitched two innings in which he allowed two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out five. Sage Nelson finished the game giving up two hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning.

On offense Cory Downey, Brandon Pugh, and Henry Smith had the big sticks for the Bulldogs picking up two hits each. Wes Burnett, Antonio Landrum, and Drew Luker also contributed to the cause with one hit each. Burnett and Downey had the only extra base hits with each connecting on a double. In the RBI race Downey, Eric Lynn, Pugh, and Smith led the way with two each followed by Burnett and Drew Luker with one.

The Bulldogs were not quite as fortunate in the second half of the double header, falling to the Excel Panthers 16-8. Things looked promising early with the Bulldogs jumping out front 7-0 after two innings. It would not hold up however as the Panthers scored 16 runs over the course of the next four innings to claim the victory.

Heath Hill got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and worked the first four innings of the game in which he allowed seven runs on 10 hits, one walk, and one hit batsman while striking out two. Antonio Landrum followed Hill for an inning in which he allowed five runs on four hits, and three walks while striking out two. Jeremy Tucker was next pitching the final two innings and allowing four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two. Landrum, who was the pitcher of record when the lead changed hands for good, was tagged with the loss dropping his season record to 3-1.

On offense the Bulldogs garnered 12 hits led by Ty Glass, Drew Luker, Tate Luker and Jeremy Tucker with two hits each. They were joined by Cory Downey, Heath Hill, Antonio Landrum, and Scottie Nelson with one hit each. Drew Luker and Nelson had the only extra base hits with a double apiece. In the RBI category Tate Luker led the Bulldogs with three followed by Nelson with two and Glass and Drew Luker with one.

On the schedule next for the Bulldogs was a visit from the Fruitdale Pirates on Tuesday, April 3 followed by a road trip to Excel on Thursday, April 5.
