It doesn't grow on trees yet
Awater line to a brand new OSB mill that employs over 100 people, a brand new water treatment plant, wireless countywide internet, laptop computers for every student, a two-county economic development group, a sparkling new civic center with auditorium, a sharp new industrial park.

It sounds like a Christmas wish list. The only problem is, Santa Claus doesn't deliver these gifts on a sleigh behind eight tiny reindeer.

No, all these things cost money. And money is a finite resource in Clarke County.

We wonder if there's enough to go around. How many more bonds can Thomasville sell? How many grants can we get? How many donations will flow to these high-minded projects?

When you read about all these great projects, does a little voice in the back of your mind wonder when we'll reach the end of our financial lease and it jerks us back? It does for us.

Have changes up in Washington dimmed the influence of our representatives to the point that, no matter how much they'd like to do it, they just can't continue to be our federal benefactors?

The goals are laudable, and desirable, but can we really afford it all? Can we afford it all right now?
