Guilty, not guilty verdicts in trials Two trials were completed during the criminal jury term in Clarke County Circuit Court last week. Emmanuel Thomas was found guilty of robbery, first degree, assault, second degree, resisting arrest and criminal mischief, third degree. The case was heard by Judge Stuart DuBose. On May 24, 2006 Thomas and co-defendant Bruce Williams robbed the Royal Inn in Jackson. According to testimony Williams hit the hotel owner, Hamukh Gandhi, in the head with a hammer while Thomas grabbed the cash register. "Our contention was that Thomas was just as guilty as Williams and his prints were on the cash register," District Attorney Spence Walker said. After the robbery a call was received from Murphy Oil that a man was asking customers for a ride out of town. When police arrived Thomas fled. Officers pursued him and he was caught. Later that day, when Thomas had been placed in the back of a squad car for transport to Clarke County Jail he kicked the back glass out of the car. Jurors were out about an hour before returning with the guilty verdicts on all four counts. In a separate trial, Tiffany James was found not guilty on criminal mischief charges. James had been charged with vandalizing an exboyfriend's vehicle, but an alibi witness testified that she did not commit the crime. The case was heard by Judge Thomas Baxter.
Some other cases were settled without trials while others were continued until the next term of court, set in the late fall.
