Relay nearing the big finale event

As April winds down the activity is heating up for teams and team members preparing for the 12th annual Relay for Life.

The Relay is a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society that unites communities in the Quest for a Cure.

Luminarias now available

Relay activities will include a candlelight ceremony at 9 p.m. at the event site, which is Gates Drive Park. Luminarias will line the perimeter of the park's walking track to memorialize and to honor those who have fought the battle with cancer. Area residents are invited to dedicate luminarias to loved ones and friends who have had this disease.

The suggested donation is $5 per luminaria. With your donation, the individual's name you designate will be written on a luminaria bag; the candle will be lit in the Friday evening ceremony. The lights at the park will be extinguished for this portion of the evening, and the glow of the candles will light up the entire park. It's a moving reminder to all who attend of the people they know and love who have had cancer.

To place a luminaria, fill out the form to the right and drop it off at the Ala-Tom RC&D Office on West Front Street in Downtown Thomasville. Or, see the person manning the special table set up that Friday evening, April 27, at the Relay for Life.

Lots of activities set

The event that kicks off the Relay on Friday night is the Survivor's Reception. All cancer survivors in the area are invited to participate. Invitations went out to those who could be identified, but if you know of someone who is a cancer survivor who didn't get one, contact Donna Phillips with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Phillips is heading up the survivor reception, and she'll be glad to include that person in the festivities. The phone number is 637-1143.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the evening, and there will be activities and movies for the kids. If you'd like to be in the entertainment line-up, call Brittany Cahalin at 636-1418.

For team members, there will be lots to do during the 12-hour event. A big scavenger hunt has been planned, and there will be tournaments for Scrabble, cancer facts bingo, volleyball, trivial pursuit, kick ball, tug-of-war, a baking contest, and the ever-popular Cow Pie 'Lympics. That competition includes a banana relay, a three-legged race, back seat driver, and other events. Here's a hint for participants- bring a change of clothes.

A number of the teams will be selling food items that night for those who come to check out all the action at the park. All of the proceeds will go towards Thomasville's total.

After 10 p.m., the Relay becomes a private activity for participants only.

Fundraisers still going on

The frenzy of activity that's still going on includes a wide spectrum of fundraisers. The Thomasville High School team is washing cars today in front of the school for $10 per car, $20 per SUV.

Thomasville United Methodist's pre-schoolers are making pins to sell.

The city's volunteer fire department will be selling pizza kits, cookie dough, and pies.

Some churches will be having Relay Sunday the weekend before the event in order to raise money for the fight against cancer.

And, for those who want to help paint Thomasville purple in preparation for Relay, purple ribbons are available to decorate your door or mailbox. The suggested donation for the ribbons is $25. The ribbon campaign honors 11-year-old cancer survivor Shiaterrica Williams.

For more information about the Relay for Life, contact Brittany Cahalin, the local coordinator, at 636-1418. To learn more about the activities planned for team members, call Sheree Henry at 636-0622 or 636-1140.
