Tigers sweep Sweet Water

The Thomasville Tigers played host to the Sweet Water Bulldogs in a Varsity/JV double header this past Friday, April 13. When the dust cleared the Tigers had defeated their guests in both contests.

The evening of baseball got under way with the Thomasville JV defeating the Sweet Water JV 14-5. The game was tight until the bottom of the third when the Tigers plated six runs to move ahead 9-3. From there they added five more in their half of the fourth while holding the Bulldogs to only two more.

Dillon Rowell got the start on the mound for Thomasville and picked up the win. In his four innings of work he allowed four runs on six hits, two walks and one hit batsman while striking out two. Taylor Sturdivant finished the game giving up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one in one inning. Antonio Landrum was charged with the loss for Bulldogs allowing nine runs on seven hits, two walks and one hit batsman in three innings.

On offense the Tigers picked up seven hits and took advantage of five walks and five hit batsmen by Bulldog pitchers. Garnering one hit each for the Tigers were; B. J. Cribb, Paxton Duke, Chris East, Shaq Jackson, Tevin Pope, Zack Ross, and Sean Skelton. In the extra-base hit category Duke, East, Pope and Ross all had doubles for the Tigers. East was the RBI leader with three, while his teammates Cory Browder, Josh Jackson, Shaq Jackson, Pope, Ross, Sam Wise and Wright all had one. Meanwhile the Bulldogs had eight hits led by Cory Downey and Chris Landrum with two each. Joining them with one hit apiece were; Jul Gaines, Jeffrey Green, Eric Lynn and Sage Nelson. Landrum led the Bulldogs in extra-base hits with a pair of doubles. He was also the RBI leader with two followed by Downey, Green, and Lynn with one.

The two teams squared off in varsity action immediately following the JV game and the Tigers emerged victorious again defeating the Bulldogs 11-1. In the game the Tigers were only on top 2-1 going into their half of the third inning but erupted for five runs in that frame to take charge of the game. They would add four more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Paul Noble was the starter on the mound for the Tigers and improved his record to 8-1 with the win. In five innings of work he allowed one run on three hits, four walks, and one hit batsman while striking out six. On the flip side Ty Glass was charged with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six in four innings. Drew Luker pitched the final inning allowing four runs five hits and one walk.

At the plate the Tiger hit parade recorded 12 hits led by three hit performances from Alex Buford and Bradley Parnell. Joining them with two hits was Justin Gilehrist while Jake Overstreet, Andrew Parten, Kenny Sanders and Justin Smith all had one. Sanders with a homerun and Gilchrist with a triple led the charge for the Tigers in the extra-base hit area while Buford and Parnell each added a double. Parnell and Sanders were the RBI leaders with two each followed by Gilchrist, J. B. LeNoir, Overstreet and Smith with one. For the Bulldogs Drew Luker, Henry Smith and Jeremy Tucker each had one hit apiece. Smith had the only extra-base hit with a double while Drew Luker had the only RBI.

Both schools will be in action this week with the Tigers scheduled to travel to Atmore for a JV/Varsity double header on Monday, April 16. Following that they will be hosting the Clarke County Tournament beginning with a 1:00 PM game on Friday, April 20, against Clarke County and then a 11:00 AM game with Jackson scheduled for Saturday, April 21. The Aggies and Bulldogs will play immediately after the Tiger's game with the Aggies on Saturday.

Sweet Water's schedule for the week begins with the Bulldogs hosting the Clarke County Bulldogs on Monday, April 16 in a varsity game. After that the Jackson Aggies come to town for a JV/Varsity double header on Tuesday, April 17. The week ends with the Bulldogs traveling to Demopolis on Thursday, April 19 for a JV/Varsity double header. Game time for both double headers is set for 4:00 PM.
