Thomasville native Rich honored in Huntsville
For more than fifty years, Evelyn Streeter Rich has committed her life to education and community causes and activities. She began her career as a classroom teacher teaching and nurturing young children to develop an inquiring mind to become responsive and productive citizens. The Rosetta James Scholarship Banquet was formed to honor individuals over 70 years of age who are still impacting the Huntsvillearea vicinity. Rich was honored with the banquet's namesake, Rosetta James, a voting rights activist; retired state representative Jim Haney; and retired minister and music educator Henry Bradford, Jr. Born in Thomasville, Rich is the youngest child of Robert Y. and Charyle Rose Streeter. Her elementary and secondary education was received at the area's public schools. After graduating as Salutatorian, she enrolled in Alabama A&M University and took advantage of all that the University had to offer. During her undergraduate years at the University, she was actively involved in numerous extra-curricular activities that were designed to make her a well-rounded student. Some include: College Choir, Thespians, Future Teachers of America, and Gamma Mu Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In 1954, Mrs. Rich received the Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Elementary Education from Alabama A&M University. In 1968, she received the Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. During her professional career, she served as an elementary education classroom teacher at schools in Thomasville. Tuscaloosa, Meridianville and Hazel Green. At the post secondary level, she served as a Demonstration teacher at the Summer Laboratory School, Alabama A&M, and the University of Alabama's Children School, Verner Elementary School Campus, Tuscaloosa. At an early age, Mrs. Rich was instilled with the values of providing community service to others. As a child, she delivered fruit and other needed items to the elderly and sick and shut-in with her grandmother. Today, her community service is marked with examples of leadership. She is actively affiliated with numerous civic, social and community organizations. In recognition of her contributions and service to the community, she has received several awards.
Mrs. Rich is the widow of the late Dr. Earlie Rich, her college sweetheart.
