Three on three hoops tourney to be held in Lower Peachtree
By Ross Wood Contributing Writer

Realizing that giving young people something to do will prevent them from getting into any trouble, organizers in the Lower Peach Tree area are announcing Coolers & Cool Hoop It Up 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

The tourney will be held at the Community House in Lower Peach Tree on May 18, 19 and 20.

"A community must do what it can to give the youth something to do," James Crawford, a native of the area and one of the organizers said. "We are trying to revitalize the community and anyone who wants to help in any way, just let us know."

The tournament is open to boys and girls age 9-19 and there is no registration fee.

Teams must have a minimum of three players and there is no maximum amount.

Team prizes for boys and girls team will be given for first place, $500; second place, $250; and third place, $125.

"Anyone who comes out will get a T-shirt and sun visor," Crawford said. "Plus we will have drinks and hot dogs, free of charge."

Any team wishing to enter must do so by May 14. They can call 334-682-5285 or fax their team info to 334-636- 8166 and lastly the information can be emailed to peechtree3on3@yahoo.com.

"On May 18, we will take all of the teams entered and draw out the brackets," Crawford said. "There will be a basketball clinic as well as a picnic for everyone.

"One big plus is the fact that we are going to install a state of the art outdoor basketball surface," he said. "It is the kind of surface that will help prevent the knee and ankle injuries you see outdoors."

Organizers hope to see it completed by May 10 or 12.

There is also an area being cleared for the picnic area and the bleachers.

"The community can help us by bringing items to use like trash containers and other like items, " Crawford said. "We already have the funding secured for another tournament next year and we are adding lights to the court."

The tournament is a part of the Wilcox County Youth Drug Prevention Coalition.
