Adkison gets high praise from board Nearing the end of his first school year as the new superintendent at Thomasville's city school system, Vic Adkison has received high marks from the school board in his first report card. Adkison was evaluated by each board member in six areas, ranging from community involvement and communication with the board to educational leadership and staff and personnel relationships. A summary Adkison's review results shows he received commendable ratings in every category. One caveat offered was in the area of staff and personnel relationships. The report noted that since Adkison's tenure has been less than a year, it was difficult for the board to fully evaluate this area. "Strengths and weaknesses in this category will become more evident in the next few months," according to the report. The other areas of review, all subject of praise were business and finance and personal qualities. The report also states that the board is looking forward to Adkison's leadership as the next year's budget is prepared, especially with the system facing some cutbacks in funding that will affect the number of positions in the schools. Other business During a work session following the review, Adkison began getting the board up to speed on funding for staff and teachers in the coming year. Adkison said he believed the personnel cutbacks needed can be achieved through the natural attrition of retirements and resignations. The goal for the remaining staff, he said, will be the efficient distribution of personnel throughout the school to meet the increasing quality demands. A state mandated raise will also put the squeeze on the budget. The school system will have to come up with $100,000 to meet the new pay rates. With local funding stagnant, Adkison believes the system will have to cut at least $200,000 from the current year's budget.
Further discussions will take place as the board approaches the next year's budget.
