Lady Tigers headed to the playoffs

The Thomasville High School Varsity and Junior Varsity softball teams both picked up three wins this past week. It all began on Thursday, April 19 when both teams defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Sweet Water in pair games played in Thomasville and ended with pair of victories over the Washington County Lady Bulldogs in a double header played over in Chatom on Thursday, April 26. Sandwiched in between was double header sweep of the Lady Tigers of Monroe County High School in games played in Thomasville on Tuesday, April 24.

Varsity

In the varsity action the Lady Tigers defeated Sweet Water 12 1 to begin the run. In the game, the Lady Tigers scored eight runs in the first inning and four in the fifth while holding the Lady Bulldogs to only one run in the fourth.

Savannah Smith started on the mound for Thomasville and went the distance to pick up the win which moved her season mark to 7-6. In five innings she gave up one run on two hits and one hit batsman while striking out seven.

At the plate Shaneka Nicholson with four hits and Ashley Crawford with three were the leaders of the Lady Tiger hit parade that pounded out fifteen hits. Savannah Smith was next with two hits while Cassie Flint, Andrianna Penn, Britney Stallworth, Nicole Washington, Dominique Watters, and Kierra Westbrook all had one. Nicholson was the leader in the extra-base hit category with two homeruns and a double while Crawford also had a double. Nicholson made it an offensive sweep leading the team in RBIs as well with five. Joining her with one each were; Crawford, Adrienne Boyette, Penn, Smith, Stallworth, and Washington.

The Lady Tigers made it two in a row when they defeated the Monroe County Ladies 13 -5. Thomasville exploded for six runs in the second inning to break open the game which was knotted at 2-2 after the first.

Savannah Smith was the starter on the mound in this one as well pitching a seven inning complete game to pick up the win. During the game she allowed five runs on six hits while striking out 10. With the win her season record improved to 8-6.

On offense Thomasville collected nine hits with Dominique Watters leading the way with three, followed by Shaneka Nicholson with two. Rounding out the attack with one hit each were; Ashley Crawford, Shelby Myers, Savannah Smith and Nicole Washington. Watters led the team in extra-base hits with a pair of doubles while Nicholson slugged her third homerun. Nicholson and Watters had the RBI lead as well with three apiece.

The last of the three wins by the varsity was a 5-0 shutout of Washington County on the road. In the game the Lady Tigers scored all the runs they would need in the top of the fifth when they plated five runs to break open a 0-0 game.

Dominique Watters got the call on the mound and pitched one hit gem to pick up the win and improve her season total to 7-3. In seven innings she blanked the Lady Bulldogs while giving up the one hit and striking out six.

While Watters and the defense were playing tough the offense did their part as well picking up 10 hits. Watters was the leader on offense as well with three hits followed by Brianna Penn with two and teammates Ashley Crawford, Cassie Flint, Shaneka Nicholson, Rachel Norris and Nicole Washington with one. In the extra-base hit category Crawford had a triple while Nicholson, Penn, Washington, and Watters all had a double. Nicholson was the RBI leader with three followed by Crawford and Watters with one.

With their season record now at 19 - 10 the Lady Tigers were slated to play in a tournament in Jackson on Friday, April 27 before taking a few days off to prepare for the Sectionals which they will host here in Thomasville on Saturday, May 5 beginning at 9:00 AM.

Junior Varsity

Like the varsity, the Lady Tiger Junior Varsity started their week off with a win over Sweet Water beating the Lady Bulldog JV 9-6. Thomasville scored all nine of their runs in the first two innings and then held off the Lady Bulldogs to post the win.

Kaley McManus got the start on the mound for the Lady Tigers and worked four innings to pick up the win. During that time she allowed six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Offensively the Lady Tiger JV was led by Natalie Washington and Alexis Watters with two hits each. Rounding out the nine hit attack with one hit each were; JuQuesta Evans, Taylor Gilchrist, Sheyenne Myers, Mary Beth Nichols, and Lindsey Overstreet. Watters had the only extra-base hits with a pair of doubles. In the RBI area Watters was the leader with three followed by Evans with two while Gilchrist, Kaley McManus, and Myers all had one.

The Lady Tiger JV next took care of the Lady Tiger JV from Monroe County shutting them out 9-0.

Lindsey Overstreet started on the mound for Thomasville and went the distance to pick up the win, improving her season total to 4-5. In four innings of work she gave up one hit and three walks while striking out five.

At the plate Thomasville picked up nine hits led by two hit performances from Mary Beth Nichols and Lindsey Overstreet. Joining them and contributing one hit to the cause were; Taylor Gilchrist, Kaley McManus, Sheyenne Myers, Natalie Washington and Rachel Wright. Gilchrist and McManus both legged out triples for the only extra-base hits. Leading the team in RBIs was Overstreet with three followed by Gilchrist, McManus, Myers, Nichols, and Wright with one apiece.

Like their varsity counter parts, the Lady Tiger JV made it three in a week when the defeated the Washington County JV 2-0 on the strength of two runs they scored in their final at bat.
