Spring training underway for THS Tigers

Those Thomasville Tigers who are returning from the team, that saw their quest for a 2006 4A State Football Championship end with a 28- 27 loss to Guntersville in the Super Six State Championships, have one thing on their mind. And that is a return to that arena where on a bitterly cold Thursday night in December last year they felt the best team didn't win the prize. Or as one returning player put it, "we didn't get the job done last time, but this year we want to go back and finish what we started. We owe it to ourselves and those seniors who worked so hard last year to get there only to see us come up short."

Perhaps a lofty goal for a team that lost nine seniors, eight of which started at one time or another on one or both sides of the ball in 2006. Add in the loss of another starter who moved and another who did not return to the team and the task of making their way back seems to be very difficult. But Coach Jack Hankins wouldn't have it any other way.

"It is our goal every season to win a state championship," Hankins said. "When we set our goals each year at the beginning of the season, we have several that we strive to meet along the way but ultimately being at the Super Six and winning a state championship tops out list."

As Coach Hankins and his staff put the 90 plus young men who showed up for the first practice of spring training through their paces, their watchful eyes will be looking for players who can step up and fill six starting positions on offense and three on defense. Of particular concern are those vacancies across the offensive front and the quarterback position. They will also be looking for others who can provide necessary depth at every position.

As is the case every spring, the practices promise to be very physical as a majority of the time will be spent on fundamentals of the game like blocking and tackling. "We don't know but one way to conduct spring practice," Coach Hankins said. "And that is wide open. When you play a schedule like we do every year the players have to be physically and mentally tough to deal with it and spring training is where that preparation begins."

The actual first day of spring practice took place on Monday, April 30 with the culmination of the three weeks of drills set for Friday, May 18, when Thomasville will host Southern Choctaw in a spring game at D. F. Anderson Field. Kickoff for the event is set for 7:00 PM
