The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger softball team rolled through the sectional tournament this past Saturday, May 5, much like a locomotive with a full head of steam. Acting as the host for the tournament, the Ladies wearing the maroon and gray left no doubt that in addition to their graciousness there was the fierceness of a Tiger in the hearts of those donning the Lady Tiger uniform.
It all started in their first game of the day, when they dismantled the Lady Blue Devils from Escambia County 11-1. After the two teams exchanged runs in the first inning it was all Thomasville from that point on as the Lady Tigers picked up four in the third and six in the fourth to put the game away.
Savannah Smith got the call on the mound in the opener and held the Ladies from Atmore to one run on three hits while striking out six. With the win she improved her season record to 10-7.
At the plate the Thomasville Ladies pounded out 13 hits led by a three hit performance from Savannah Smith. Right behind her with two hits each were; Ashley Crawford, Cassie Flint and Dominique Watters. Joining them in the hit parade with one hit were; Shaneka Nicholson, Andrianna Penn, Brianna Penn, and Nicole Washington. In the extra-base hit category Watters blasted a homerun; Crawford and Washington legged out triples; while the Penn sisters and Smith had doubles. Watters was the RBI leader with four followed by Crawford and Smith with two and Andrianna Penn and Washington with one.

Things only got better in game two as the Lady Tigers blanked the Lady Aggies from Jackson 12-0. The girls from Thomasville set the tone early, picking up five in the first and four in the second to take control of the game.
Dominique Watters got the start on the mound kept the Lady Aggies completely in check as she hurled her fourth no hitter of the season. In five innings she only gave up two walks while striking out five.
The offense matched their out put in game one picking up 13 hits once again. Dominique Watters led the charge with four hits followed by Savannah Smith with three and Ashley Crawford with two. Rounding out the hit total with one each were; Shelby Myers, Shaneka Nicholson, Brianna Penn, and Nicole Washington. Watters set the pace in the extra-base hit category with three doubles while Smith added a triple. Watters was also the team leader in RBIs with three followed by Myers and Penn with two and Smith with one.
If it is possible, there are some who would argue that the Thomasville Ladies actually saved their best for last on Saturday when they defeated the Lady Tigers from Monroe County 13-3 in the championship game. Once again it was a combination of great pitching, good defense and dynamite hitting that proved to be the deciding factors in the game. Pushing across two runs in each of the first two innings, the Thomasville offense grabbed an early lead that they would ultimately extend to the ten run victory.
Topping their performance in both of the previous games the Thomasville hit squad collected seventeen hits. Leading the way with three hits apiece were; Ashley Crawford, Shaneka Nicholson, and Brianna Penn. On their heals with two hits each were Cassie Flint and Nicole Washington while Shelby Myers, Rachel Norris, Savannah Smith and Dominique Watters each added one. Seven players in the Thomasville lineup had extra-base hits with Crawford, Flint, Myers, Nicholson, Penn, Washington, and Watters all connecting on a double. In the RBI chase Crawford led the team with four, followed by Watters with three and Nicholson with two. Rounding out the total with one apiece were; Flint, Myers, Smith and Washington.
Taking charge on the mound was Dominique Watters who moved her season total to 11-3 with the win. In seven innings of work she allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out nine.
Winning the sectional tournament moved the Thomasville
Ladies' record to 27-11 and propelled them into the state playoffs where they
were scheduled to host the SubState first round on Tuesday, May 8. Coming to
Thomasville for the 3:30 matchup were the Lady Tigers of T. R. Miller High
School.
