An international city, eh?
Arthur McLean
Ihad a good laugh Sunday morning when I read the following line in the Press-Register: "Indeed, it's not too much of a stretch to say that Mobile has become an international city."

Now, don't get me wrong, Mobile's my hometown and I love it and want to see it grow and prosper, but an "international city" it ain't.

A deep wellspring of hubris must be one of the job qualifications for being an editorial writer down there.

Mobile certainly has an international heritage. But to call it an international city in the modern vernacular really is too much of a stretch.

Why, just over on the arts page, I read of one of Mobile's rare few art galleries closing. International cities can support more than a couple of co-op art galleries.

Or maybe I'm missing the great immigrant populations and their vibrant shops and eateries. Mobile's version of Chinatown, Little Italy and the great Irish and Scottish, Central and South American influenced places have simply escaped notice.

Now, I admit if I were down there and drinking the same ThyssenKrupp coolaid, I bet I'd be writing a few grandiose things myself.

I could also be taking this a little out of context for fun. The line just preceding the "international city" seems to indicate the writer's really talking about international competition for business and industry.

Well if that's the case, then yes, Mobile is in an international marketplace for jobs and industry. But that doesn't make it any different from Thomasville or thousands of other cities big and small across the country.

We're all competing internationally now. Where do you think all those textile jobs in Thomasville, Atmore and hundreds of other small towns went?

It's great news that south Alabama landed this project, to be sure, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
