Spiritual Reflections
Good Samaritans are needed everywhere
Pat Ozment, Jr.

We were visited this week by our IMB Member Care team who are stationed in a country which neighbors Ghana. Since they travel at times into areas where their identity might need to be hidden I will call them Dr. and Mrs. Care.

The evening of their arrival they took us out to dinner, along with a young ISC couple who they are training. We had just ordered our food when my cell phone rang. The call was from our good friend and next door neighbor, Grace Wuni, the wife of the Principal of the Seminary, who is also our pastor.

She was returning from her job, working with women and children in a nearby village, when she and a companion were thrown from the motorcycle they use for transportation. They were both lying along side the road, with injuries from the accident and needed help. Grace had my number in her phone and her husband was hundreds of miles away in Accra.

There is no emergency medical service in Tamale, no ambulance or rescue service, no 911, and the police do not respond unless specifically requested. Accident victims must depend on bystanders for help. Grace was upset and in pain, but she was able to tell me where she was, so the Dr. and I left our party at the restaurant, and set out to find the two injured ladies.

We stopped to get another neighbor, Mr. Lancer who knew the area, and what to do in these circumstances. We found the ladies beside the road in a crowd of people who wanted to help, but did not know how. The Dr. quickly evaluated their injuries, and with assistance from those who had gathered, the ladies were placed in our truck. With Mr. Lancer's help we found the clinic of the local Orthopedic surgeon, and summoned him by phone.

As I write this Grace is undergoing surgery to place a rod in her left leg which was broken just below the knee. We are learning that Missionary work has many facets, read Luke 10:25-37. Good Samaritans are needed everywhere. "Go and do likewise," and I'll see you in Church.
