Civil War Letters the subject of Historical Society Meeting

The Clarke County Historical Society will meet on May 27, at 2:30 p.m. at the Grove Hill Town Hall. The speaker for the meeting will be Mrs. Ellen Williams, a retired schoolteacher from Leroy. Mrs. Williams has edited and published "Prey for Us All", a collection of war letters of Benjamin Franklin Porter. Porter was 17 years old when he joined the Confederate Army in St. Stephens in 1861. The letters tell of his surviving four years in the army, including being wounded twice and confinement in a Union prison. Copies of the book will be available for sale. The public is invited to the meeting.

VFW Post 5106 holds meeting May 28

VFW Post 5106 and its Ladies Auxillary will have their regular monthly meeting Monday night, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. All members are invited.

The Smith Family Reunion

The Willie Smith Family reunion will be June 3, at the Willie Smith Family home in Midway. Please bring your lawn chairs.

CCHS Class of 1962 reunion

The CCHS Class of 1962 will have a class reunion, June 9, at 2:00 p.m. at Scotch Station Park, Asbury Road, Whatley. All class members and teachers are invited to attend. A meal will be served at 5:00 p.m. ($20.00 per person). Contact Jerry Hare at (334) 636-4774 for details.
