Gas prices eclipse $3

An unwanted threshold was crossed last Friday when regular gasoline climbed to over $3 a gallon at most Alabama pumps.

The price hike comes just in time for Memorial Day weekend- the traditional beginning of summer vacation travel time.

Just the day before, the price had been in the mid to upper $2.90s at most places.

In Clarke County, prices range from $3.08 to $3.19 for regular at most pumps.

Prices are slightly lower in the larger metro areas, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Nationwide, the average price of self-servce regular gasoline is $3.18 cents a gallon, the Lundberg Survey reported. That's up more than 11 cents from two weeks ago.

According to the Birmingham AAA, pump prices have risen about 23 cents a gallon since last month.
