Taking Names and Keeping Score
Because of the efforts of the Lion's Club here in Thomasville and a number of other volunteers who pitched in to help make the game possible, all reports indicate the inaugural year proved to be a successful one. Twenty eight high school juniors and seniors from Clarke, Monroe, Washington and Wilcox counties participated in the game which was played at Thomasville High School. The teams were divided into East and West squads with fourteen players being aligned on each side. Participating on the East team were: Patrick Bowen, Stephen Jaye, and Hunter Norris from Excel High School; Sam Griffin and Todd Wailer from Jackson High School; Austin Bohannon and Trent Kaylor from Monroe County High School, Paul Noble, Jake Overstreet, Bradley Parnell, Andrew Parten, and Justin Smith from Thomasville High School; and Quintarrus Brooks and Edward Grayson from Wilcox Central High School.
Volunteering their time to serve as coaches for the teams were: Chris Young from Clarke County High School; Clint Anderson and Adam Elliott from Thomasville High School; and Ricky Davidson from Washington County High School. Coach Elliott was filling in for Coach Jason Jones from Jackson High School who had to miss the game due to the birth of his first child. Congratulations Jason and Danica! As expected this talented group of young athletes put on a show for the large crowd attending the game. The game started off with the two teams scoring a total of nine runs between them in the first inning and then settled down to a well played nine inning game that saw the West emerge as an 11-6 winner. For those fans that are offensive minded it was a perfect situation as the two teams combined for 27 hits in the contest. For the fans who love good pitching, the staffs of the two teams combined to strike out 17 hitters in the game as well. Not to leave out those fans who love to see great defense, there was only one error recorded in the game. So any way you look at it, the game was a crowd pleaser. As is the process for the East - West series, a team was selected from the two squads to represent this area of the state in round two which will be played in Brewton this Saturday, May 26. Included on that team were: Hunter Cross - Clarke County; Patrick Bowen, Stephen Jaye, and Hunter Norris - Excel; Grant Brown, Brandon Jones, Brittain Shultz, and Taylor White - Leroy; Ethan Chancey and Taylor Owen - Millry; Austin Bohannon-Monroe County; Paul Noble and Andrew Parten -Thomasville; and Kyle Dees and Zac Turner-Washington County. Coaches accompanying the team to Brewton will be Ricky Davidson and Chris Young. Above and beyond the success of the game on the field, the Lion's Club was able to raise some money for the Alabama Lions Sight Conversation Program as well as establish a good beginning on what they hope will become a long time commitment to keep the East - West game in Thomasville. For the city of Thomasville it was one more opportunity to have a successful baseball event in our community which is recognized within the state and for that matter throughout the Southeast as the perfect place for such events. For the rest of us it was a great opportunity to see some of the best high school baseball talent in this area competing against each other. And if history is truly a predictor of the future, as some people say, it was an opportunity to see some of those from our area who will not only be taking their talent to the college level but possibly to the professional ranks as well. Great job and thanks, Lion's Club!
Until next time..........be safe!
