Karen Collins, who graduated from Thomasville High School in 1981, directed the Gulf Shores High School Dolphins to the AHSAA 5A State Softball Championship this past week. Her team, which swept through the tournament held in Montgomery undefeated, edged Springville 3 -2 in the finals on Saturday, May 19, to claim the title. It was the seventh straight appearance in the state tournament for the school but the first championship.
This year's win was especially sweet in light of the fact that the Dolphins, who had moved up to the 5A classification this season, had finished as the runner up in 4A last season.
Collins spent thirteen years coaching at Clarke County High School before moving to the Baldwin County school for the 2005 - 2006 school year.
