May getting dryer over the years Even with the rain received in the past day, May of 2007 could prove to be one of the driest on record for Thomasville. According to the National Weather Service, a mere 1/3 of an inch of rain was recorded through May 30 for the month in Thomasville. Last year, 5.77 inches of rain was recorded for the month, and the average rainfall for May from 1971- 2000 is 4.75 inches. "It's one of the driest months I can remember," said Mayor Sheldon Day. "It's one of the worst droughts we've had." In recent history, May is proving to be a very dry month in southwest Alabama. Figures from the National Weather Service office in Mobile for the coastal area show reduced rainfall in May. Six out of the last seven years show May's rainfall has been below historic normal averages. Only in 2003 did rainfall exceed normal amounts. That year saw massive rainfall of nearly 10 inches for the month. Despite the drought, Day said Thomasville's water supply has kept up with demand, but reports show the water treatment plant at Pine Hill, Thomasville's source for drinking water, running nearly at full capacity.
Plans for the city to build its own water treatment plan are on the board and undergoing review by the USDA, but construction has not yet started.
