June 5 vote on two big issues

Clarke Countians and everyone else in Alabama will be called upon to go to the polls June 5.

Voters won't find any candidates on the short ballot- only two constitutional amendments.

State leaders term Amendment 1 very important to securing the new ThyssenKrupp steel mill announced recently for Calvert.

Legislators early this year passed legislation to increase the state's bond debt limit from $350 million to $750 million to help fund incentives for ThyssenKrupp and other companies considering new plants in Alabama.

Gov. Bob Riley and state leaders are urging citizens to vote "yes" on Amendment 1.

Amendment 2 would establish a permanent trust fund to help pay healthcare costs for state and education retirees. Currently, the state has $20 billion in unfunded benefit obligations for retirees.

Proponents say the trust fund is needed so the state won't have to borrow money to fund the obligations.
