Politics gives me heartburn
Arthur McLean
Iwas reading something the other day that mentioned the second Republican Presidential candidate debate. There have been two Republican candidate debates? Where have I been? Of course, it's not like I've missed anything.

Does this current crop of Democrats and Republicans hoping for the big seat make you want to yawn too?

I've probably met a couple dozen D.C. politicians in my time, and nearly every one has made me wonder how they got elected to anything. At this point, I have no doubt I'll wonder the same thing about our next president.

In Chris Matthews' old book Hardball, he talked about how some politicians were retail politicians, meaning they were very good at faceto face politics and convincing people that they were the person for the job.

Apparently, most of the politicians I've met were not retail politicians, and in this day of television, I guess that's not an important part of the equation anymore. But do they all have to come across so poorly on television too?

As usual, I imagine I will grow very tired of presidential election politics very quickly.

Irony

Speaking of politics, it probably wouldn't be politics without a heaping dose of irony.

I get more unsolicited emails than you can shake a stick at. I've been trying to train my email programs spam filter, but it doesn't seem to help much.

I'm always getting emailed editorials from the Ayn Rand Institute. For those who don't know Ayn Rand is the author of such novels as Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. She was also the leading light in the Objectivism movement.

Well, I get these rants from the Ayn Rand Institute every now and then about how CEOs aren't paid too much and that all those environmental regulations aren't helping anything. This list goes on, but I think you get the picture.

It's not a stretch to say that the basic premise of most of these opinion pieces is that you should be making as much money has humanly possible, get rid of any rules that get in the way of making a lot of money and if you're not getting paid for it, it shouldn't be done.

So I found it was funny when, on a whim, I took a look at the loving Institute's web site only to find out it's a non-profit entity! Oh irony!
