By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Thomasville Travelers, who were at home for the second weekend in a row, picked up three wins against two losses. Playing two games on Friday, June 8, two on Saturday, June 9 and one on Sunday, June 10 the Travelers took three of four from the Birmingham Starz and dropped one to the Southland Hogs.

In Friday's action the Travelers took the Starz 10-1 in their first meeting of the weekend before falling to the Hogs 4-3.

Briggs Bishop got the start against the Starz and picked up his second win of the season working five innings in which he gave up five hits while striking out five. Bradley Parnell finished the game allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one.

At the plate the Travelers were out of the blocks early picking up three runs in each of the first two innings. Jake Overstreet led the charge with three hits followed by Lance Ingram with two. Joining them with one hit each were teammates Clint Brown, Brionne Jones, Daine Soloman and Tanner Williams. Overstreet was also the leader in extrabase hits with a pair of doubles while Ingram also recorded a two-bagger. In the RBI category Overstreet had the lead with three followed by Ingram and Williams with two and Brown and Jones with one.

The second game of the evening didn't go quite as well with the Travelers dropping a hard fought 4-3 decision to the Southland Hogs from Houma, Louisiana. In the game the Hogs recorded all four of their runs in the third and then held off a Traveler rally that saw them pick up two in the sixth and one in the seventh before stranding the tying and winning run in scoring position when the final out was made.

Robert Malone who started on the mound for the Travelers was charged with the loss. In six innings of work he allowed four runs on five hits, four walks, and one hit batsman while striking out seven. Lance Ingram tossed the final inning in which he gave up two hits and struck out one.

On offense the Thomasville squad picked up eight hits led by two hit performances from Clint Brown, Jake Overstreet, and Daine Soloman. Joining them with one hit was Lance Ingram and Chris Owes. In the extra-base hit area Brown, Ingram and Owes each had a double. The RBIs came from Brown, Ingram and Soloman.

Saturday proved to the most productive day for the Travelers as they defeated the visiting Starz twice 13 -3 and 16-9.

Will Buford started on the mound and picked up the win in game one allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in four innings of work. Tanner Williams pitched the final three innings giving up two hits while striking out three.

Over on offense the Travelers parlayed seven hits into their 13 runs led by Judd McWain and Daine Soloman with two hits each. Lance Ingram, Brionne Jones and Matthew Sparks added one hit each to the cause, in the extra-base hit category Soloman led the team with two doubles followed by Ingram with one double. McWain and Ingram had the RBI lead with three each followed by Soloman with two and Chris Owes with one.

In their second one on Saturday, the Starz and Travelers played the nightcap. As was the case in their first one of the day, the Travelers rode a potent offense to victory.

Greg West, who started on the hill for Thomasville, pretty much kept the Starz in check for the first three innings allowing one run on four walks and striking out three. Lance Ingram relieved him and pitched the final four innings to pick up the win. During his stint on the mound Ingram allowed eight runs on seven hits, two walks, and one hit batsman while striking out five.

In the game the Tiger offense had its best showing of the weekend registering 18 hits against the Starz pitching staff. Clint Anderson and Chris Owes had the big sticks with three hits each while Clint Brown, Lance Ingram, Judd McWain, Daine Soloman and Matthew Sparks picked up two each. Joining them on the hit parade with one hit were Patrick Weaver and Tanner Williams. In the extra-base hit category Ingram blasted two doubles to lead the way followed by McWain with his first homerun of the year, Sparks with a triple, and Owes and Weaver each with a double. McWain was the RBI leader with four followed by Anderson with three, and Ingram and Sparks with two apiece. Picking up one RBI were; Brown, Owes and Soloman.

Despite putting up 12 hits to their opponents' eight in the Sunday matinee, the Travelers fell short losing, 8-6 to the Starz. Justin Rayborn, a newcomer to the Travelers, got the nod on the mound and worked the first 1 1/3 innings before giving way to Briggs Bishop. Rayborn in his stint allowed four runs on three hits, three walks and one hit batsman while striking out two. Bishop, who was on a quick turnaround from Friday, was charged with the loss giving up three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two in 2 2/3 innings. Parnell who had also tossed a few on Friday, finished things up giving up one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two.

On the flip side the Traveler offense had 12 hits led by Jansen Rayborn and Daine Soloman with three hit performances. Jansen like his brother Justin was also in his first game with the Travelers. Right behind them with two hits was Matthew Sparks. Rounding out the Traveler hitting with one hit each were; Clint Brown, Judd McWain, Chris Owes, and Tanner Williams. McWain and Sparks each had a round tripper to lead the extra-base hit category while Soloman added a double.
