From the Editor's Desk
The Internet is probably the procrastinator's best friend/worst enemy. Procrastination crack is what they should call it. Instead of taking care of that feature story, you can finally quench your thirst for knowing the differences between Pipe Organ Mud Daubers and regular old run of the mill Wasps. How fascinating! Yes, when it comes to estimating how much time I need for certain things or how much time I have left, it may be the only time when I'm the perpetual optimist. There's always plenty of time to get things done. Most of the world seems to take a dim view of this behavior, but I've found a place where being a procrastinator, or at least fashionably late to the party is a good thing: technology. Now, being late is no good if you're trying to develop and sell all the great techy goods we can buy today, but it can be pretty sweet if you're in the market to buy techy goodies.... Excuse me, just went away for a minute there to see what kinds of new techy goodies are out there. Wow, there's some really cool stuff. Take for instance the Apple iPhone to be released next week. This thing is pretty darn cool from what I can tell, but I'm not going to jump in a grab the first one to hit the shelves. No sir. I'm going to procrastinate. I'm going to stand back until the smoke clears. Would I like to have one? Sure! But this is a new product for Apple, and, well, I've been watching this company long enough to know you probably shouldn't buy the first generation of any completely new product it makes. This is more a new product thing than an Apple thing, but new products always have significant teething problems. I think I'll let other people perform the final stage of product testing instead of yours truly. The next thing to give me pause is the price. These things are going to sell for $400 and up with a two-year plan. Ouch! Here's where waiting pays off again. Not only will we likely get a better product, but it will be half the price in six months or so. And even if it's not, there will likely be a competing product out on the market by that time that will be nearly as good for half the price.
So, if you're a procrastinator like me, take heart. It's not as bad as it can seem sometimes. Let those "early adopters" do what they do, and you can come in after the smoke clears to be the smart shopper.
