Spiritual Reflections
Don't let what you see distract you from God's purpose
Pat Ozment, Jr.
Several Sundays ago when I was at Moglaa Baptist Church I was asked to say a few words. Don't laugh, because I almost got tickled speechless by something I saw as I looked out at the crowd. That happens sometimes to preachers.

Some of you have no idea what funny things the preacher sees while he is preaching. I remember when I was a Seminary student, I was asked to supply preach at a newly formed church in Salem, Arkansas. The church met in a vacant store building, formally a pharmacy. While I preaching I noticed a large sign on the opposite wall that said, "Get your health and beauty aids here."

When our son preached for the first time as a 16 year old, his train of thought was disrupted when his gaze became focused on a man who unconsciously shook his head every few seconds. Chris mistook the man's nervous twitch for disagreement.

The thing I saw at Moglaa Baptist Church was something written on a tee shirt worn by a young man.

Now you should understand that many people over here wear clothing that came from the U.S. There are shops all around Tamale that specialize in previously owned apparel.

One day I was downtown Tamale, and saw two young Ghanaians wearing identical shirts and pants. The surprising thing was that the shirts and pants were uniforms and were monogrammed, "Kroger's Super Market." I can assure you there are no Krogers over here.

Anyway back to the tee shirt. The young man's gray tee shirt bore a picture of a flaming soft ball with the words, "West Mobile Fast Pitch 12 and under All Stars."

It occurred to me that old preachers aren't the only thing recycled in West Africa.

My point, if there is one, is we must be careful that what we see does not distract us from God's purpose. That purpose is that men might know God, by grace through faith in Jesus. John's Gospel, 12:21, "They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."

Show them Jesus, and I'll see you in Church.
