Taking Names and Keeping Score One thing that has always been a fun part of the weekend is a family golf tournament. From the very first one through this year it has served as a very good way for the male members of the family to indulge their competitive nature while enjoying some great fellowship. Although I am sure the time is coming when the tournament will become coed, I guess the thought of trudging through eighteen hole of golf instead of spending time at the beach or pool just hasn't caught on with the female members of our family yet. For the past several reunion tournaments, including this year's edition, the field of players has had representatives from three generations participating. Among this year's group of thirty plus hopefuls challenging the Gulf State Park course were the youngest who was eleven and the oldest who was eighty plus. With the tournament format being a four-man scramble. Our tournament director, Robert Plummer, did his best to divide our group into equal teams and from what I could tell did a good job. My individual team which consisted of cousins Will Compton from Atlanta, Mark Crim from Birmingham, Shine Hollingcr from Camden and myself meshed together very well and besides having a great time visiting, played pretty well too. As a matter of fact our four under par score turned out to be good enough to finish third in the tournament and we could have contended for the top spot had we been able to get a little closer on our approach shots. We were very consistent all day in that we did not have a single bogie and put ourselves in position to putt for a birdie on every hole. The only problem was, all but one of our birdie putts were from beyond twenty five feet. As our score would indicate, we did manage to sink four of them. What it doesn't reflect is that we had two more to lip out. That is significant in that the top team finished seven under and the second place team at six under. Oh well, no use in crying over spilt milk, as my mother would say. And besides my oldest son Chuck was on the winning team so I have to be happy for them. For my cousin Mark and I who, let's just say no longer qualify as members of the thirty and under crowd, it was sure nice to have young Will and Shine, who arc still in high school, as members of our team. Besides being able to smash a golf ball, their youthful exuberance was a good balance for our more steady as you go approach to the challenges of the course. Now that the reunion for this year has come and gone and the 2007 Plummer Classic is in the record hooks, we will focus our attention as a family on 2009 and the next Plummer gathering. Only time will tell who all will be able to attend and who in the family will be among those playing in the golf tournament. The things that are for certain is the legacy of love that has been passed down from one generation to the next in this family will continue and any who are able to play in the next golf tournament will have a good time and enjoy great fellowship regardless of their score.
Until next time ........be safe!
