Darlings eliminated from district tournament
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The 7&8 year old Dixie Darling All-Star softball team was eliminated from the District tournament on Wednesday, June 27 when the girls from Butler held on to beat them 15 - 12. It marked the second time that Thomasville had fallen to the girls from Choctaw County who went through the tournament undefeated. Even in the loss, the Thomasville girls managed to score more points on the eventual champion than anyone else did. Prior to the loss, the Thomasville girls picked up their second win in the tournament when they defeated Sumter County 12 - 1 on Monday, June 25.

In the win over Sumter County the Thomasville girls scored five runs in both of their first two innings and never looked back. Leading the Thomasville offense, which pounded out 20 hits, was Ashley Baugh, Kalisha Hudson, and Jessika Newberry with three hits apiece. Right behind them with two hits each were; Abbigail Carpenter and Lauren Lawrence. Rounding out the attack with one hit were; Haley Amos, Katherine Lee Bishop, Morgan Brasell, Haleigh Chaney, Haley Norris, Ashby Shelley, and Brelee Vick.

Despite losing to Butler, the Thomasville offense stayed hot, recording 18 hits. Jessika Newberry led the hit parade with three hits, followed by Haley Amos, Ashley Baugh, Abbigail Carpenter, Kalisha Hudson, and Lauren Lawrence with two. Picking up one hit in the losing effort were; Katherine Lee Bishop, Morgan Brasell, Haleigh Chaney, Haley Norris, and Ashby Shelley.

Although naturally disappointed in coming up a little short, the Thomasville Dixie Darlings should be commended for their efforts and final third place finish in the ten-team tournament. Thomasville Coach Mimi Hill summed it up this way, "Our girls played softball the way it should be played, with a lot of heart and a never give up attitude. We practiced and played hard and I am very proud of them."
