Ponytails eliminated from district tournament
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The 11&12 year old Dixie Ponytails All-Star softball team lost their second game in the District Tournament being held in Gilbertown on Wednesday, June 27, falling to Linden 10-0. With the loss they were eliminated from the tournament. Before the Wednesday defeat, the Thomasville girls picked up their third win in the tournament on Tuesday, June 26 when the game they had started playing on Monday, June 25, against the Wilcox Ponytails was finally concluded. In the game, which Thomasville ultimately won 12-1, play was originally suspended on Monday in the second inning and resumed on Tuesday. It was then delayed again in the fourth inning on Tuesday for 45 minutes because of lightening during which time the Wilcox team conceded.

In their win over Wilcox, the Thomasville girls, who were behind 1-0 going into their half of the second inning, scored six runs in both their next two at bats to claim the victory. Tiffany Drinkard and Alli Pope combined on the mound to hold the Wilcox hitters to only two hits in the game. Drinkard started the game and pitched the first two innings allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out four. Pope pitched the final two innings giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two.

On offense the Thomasville girls had 10 hits led by Alli Pope's three hit performance. Following her with two hits each were Callie Jackson and Hannah Sparks while Tiffany Drinkard, Destiny Dunning, and Jordan Hudson contributed one. Pope had Thomasville's only extra-base hit with a triple. In the RBI category Hudson led the way with two followed by Rachel Gavin, Jackson, Pope and Sparks with one.

In the Thomasville girls' loss to Linden, Tiffany Baugh, who was the starter on the mound, was tagged with the loss. In 4 1/3 innings of work she allowed nine runs on four hits, six walks, and one hit batsman while striking out four. Alli Pope pitched the final 2/3 inning allowing one run on one hit and one walk.

At the plate, the Thomasville girls were blanked by Linden, picking up no hits in the game.

Even though there is naturally some disappointment in their being eliminated from the District tournament, the Thomasville Ponytails can be proud of winning three games and the effort they gave throughout the competition.
