North Clarke team headed to state

The North Clarke fourteen year-old All-Star Baseball team moved to 3 and 1 in the District 7 Tournament being played in Jackson with a 15-0 win over the Fairhope All-Star team on Monday, July 9.

With the win on Monday the North Clarke All-Stars locked up a spot in the State Tournament at Enterprise.

The win marked the second time in the double elimination tournament that the boys from Clarke County had defeated the boys from the Eastern Shore and accounted for their third win against one defeat. They opened play on Friday, July 6, with a 13-3 win over Saraland, then followed that with their first meeting with Fairhope on Saturday, July 7, which they took 19-0. Their first and only loss to date came on Sunday, July 8, when the host Jackson bested them 13-3.

In their win over Saraland, the North Clarke offense parlayed eight hits into 13 runs. Leading the charge was Windham Jackson with three hits followed by Darius Bowen and Jacob Horton with two hits each. Will Wiggins added one hit to round out the attack. In the extra-base hit category Jackson had a pair of homeruns while Wiggins had a double. Jackson was the RBI leader as well with five; followed by Brett Skelton and Wiggins with two each; Bowens, Jake Dukes, and Horton with one apiece.

On the mound Brett Skelton picked up the win for North Clarke allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine in four innings of work. Darius Bowen closed the game pitching one inning.

In their game Saturday, DeAndre Love started on the mound for North Clarke and shut out the boys from Fairhope, giving up one hit and three walks while striking out 12 in five innings. Darius Bowen once again was brought on for the final inning in which he struck out two.

At the plate North Clarke recorded eleven hits led by Darius Bowen's three hit performance. Following close behind him with two hits were Jacob Horton and Brett Skelton while Harrison Lewis, Windham Jackson, DeAndre Love, and Michael Thompson all added one. In the extra-base hit category Bowen was again the leader with a double and a triple. Love and Skelton also had a double to add to the cause. Horton was the RBI leader with four followed by Bowen and Love with two each and Lewis and Skelton with one.

On Sunday the North Clarke bats went almost silent as Jackson's Phillip Ervin pitched a three hit complete game against them. Picking up the three hits for North Clarke were; Brett Green, Windham Jackson and Will Wiggins. Green and Jackson both had home runs for the team's only extrabase hits and each had one RBI to lead the team in that area.

Taking the loss on the mound for North Clarke was starter Brandon Cade who gave up six runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one in two innings of action. Jacob Horton followed Cade to the mound and worked three innings in which he allowed six runs on five hits while striking out four. Darius Bowen pitched the last inning allowing one run on two hits.

In Monday's win over Fairhope, the North Clarke offense came to life again collecting nine hits and scoring 15 runs. DeAndre Love led the charge with three hits followed by Jacob Horton with two. Joining them with one hit each were; Darius Bowen, Brett Green, Zatrix Taylor and Will Wiggins. In the extra-base hit category Love was the leader with a homerun and double while Horton and Wiggins each had a homerun and Bowen a double. Love was the RBI leader as well with four followed by Horton with three. Four others including; Bowen, Harrison Lewis, Taylor and Wiggins had one RBI.

On the mound Darius Bowen, who started the game, pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win. During his stint he gave up one hit and struck out four. Jake Dukes pitched the final two innings, striking out three.

With the win on Monday the North Clarke All-Stars locked up a spot in the State Tournament at Enterprise beginning on Friday, July 20. They were scheduled to play Jackson again at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 10, in the finals of the District tournament. To win the tournament they would have to beat Jackson twice.
