The Thomasville 11 & 12 year old All-Star Baseball team finished 2 and 2 in the District 4 tournament being played in Thomasville last week. The local team won their first two games in the tournament only to see the eventual champion Clanton squad come back through the losers' bracket to take two straight from them and claim the crown.

Play in the tournament began on Monday, July 2, with Thomasville playing Chiltauga in the second game of the night. The Thomasville boys took care of business in their opener defeating Chiltauga 10-0.

In the game Thomasville used three pitchers starting with Tyler Hayes who pitched two innings in which he gave up one hit, one walk and hit one batter while striking out three. Cory Orr, who also pitched two innings, followed Hayes allowing one walk and striking out four. Tevin Watters closed the game out working the final two innings in which he gave up one hit and struck out five.

At the plate Thomasville pounded out eleven hits with Cody Shoemaker and Tevin Watters leading the way with two hits each. Joining them on the hit parade with one hit were; Logan Bishop, Christian Carpenter, Ryan Cribb, Tyler Dement, Caleb DeRouen, Tyler Hayes, and Cory Orr. In the extra-base hit category Watters had a pair of doubles while DeRouen had a double and Bishop and Hayes both connected on homeruns. DeRouen and Watters were the RBI leaders with two each followed by Bishop, Hayes and Orr with one apiece.

On Tuesday, July 3, Thomasville was matched up with Clanton who had won their first game of the tournament over Wilcox 12- 1 the day before. In this first meeting between the two teams that would ultimately play for the championship, Thomasville scored a run in the first inning and one in the fourth on a pair of solo homeruns and then held Clanton's offense in check to post a 2-0 victory. Tyler Hayes started on the mound for Thomasville and went the distance to pick up the win. In six innings he shut out Clanton allowing two hits and striking out 10.

On offense Thomasville picked up five hits with Christian Carpenter, Steffan Chapman, Tyler Dement, Tyler Hayes, and Tevin Watters all recording one. Hayes and Watters had the only extra-base hits and the only RBIs with each connecting on a solo homerun.

After getting the day off on Wednesday, July 4, Thomasville found themselves back against Clanton on Thursday, July 5. Clanton had advanced to the Thursday game by defeating Wilcox 21-1 on Independence Day.

Just as Tuesday's game had been all Thomasville, Thursday belonged to Clanton as the pitchers the on the team from heart of peach country held the Thomasville offense to only one hit on their way to a 9-0 win. Cody Shoemaker was the lone Thomasville player with a hit.

On the mound Tevin Watters suffered the loss for Thomasville allowing nine runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings of work.

The win by Clanton forced another game between them and Thomasville on Friday, July 6 to determine the tournament winner and who would represent District 4 in the state tournament.

In the final meeting between the two, Clanton took charge of the game early scoring in every inning on their way to a 12-2 win over Thomasville. Tyler Hayes, who had beaten Clanton on Tuesday, got the start on the mound again for the hometown team. This time however his magic touch on the mound was no where to be found as the Clanton offense got to him for 11 runs on seven hits and three hit batsmen in 4 innings. Hayes did strike out seven during his stint on the mound. Corey Orr pitched the final two innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out two.

Over on offense Thomasville picked up five hits in the game with Steffan Chapman, Tyler Dement, Tyler Hayes, Cody Shoemaker and Tevin Watters getting one each. Watters had the only extrabase hit with a double and drove in both of Thomasville's runs.

Despite the obvious disappointment that comes from losing the tournament the Thomasville team can take pride in the fact they finished second in the District and won the Sub-District to qualify for the District Tournament.
