By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Thomasville Travelers went on the road on Saturday, July 7, to play the Eastern Shore Mafia in a double header and came away with a split. In the twin bill that was played at the sports complex in Loxley, the Mafia took a 1 - 0 win in the first game with the Travelers evening things up with a 6-3 win in the second one which was shortened to five innings because of the weather.

In the first game the Mafia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and made it stand up. The pitching was good for both teams with the Mafia pitcher holding the Travelers to only two hits while two Traveler pitchers only allowed four. Briggs Bishop was the starter and eventual loser for the Travelers, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five in five innings of work. Keith West came on in the sixth and gave up one hit while striking out one in that one inning.

At the plate the Travelers could only muster two hits with Mike Harrell and Tanner Williams picking up one each.

Things got better in game two with the Traveler offense plating six runs on nine hits. Leading the charge for the offense were Mike Harrell and Kevin Orso with two hits each. Joining them with one hit apiece were; Briggs Bishop, Lance Ingram, Chris Owes, Patrick Weaver and Tanner Williams. In the extra-base hit category Bishop lead the way with a homerun with Orso and Williams each picking up a two-bagger. Bishop and Orso led the team in RBIs with two apiece while Harrell had one.

On the mound Bradley Parnell got the start and picked up the win. In three innings of work he allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one. Will Buford followed Parnell to the mound where he worked the final two innings allowing two runs on two hits and three walks.

The Travelers are next scheduled for a double header in Monroeville on Sunday, July 15, at Alabama Southern Community College with the start time set for 1:00 PM.
