A much more visible portion of work is beginning to take place at the old Thomasville High School building in preparations for it becoming the new civic center.

Earth movers were at work this week leveling the hill in front of the school in preparation for creating a parking lot and a driveway.

The drive will lead up to the front entrance for ease of dropping off visitors. According to the last set of architectural drawings for the center reviewed by the Times, the entrance would be covered.

Meanwhile, crews at the back end of the school were placing forms this week in advance of pouring a foundation for the new stage.

Mayor Sheldon Day said work is beginning to pick up speed on the civic center project. "Thankfully, we haven't hit any more snags to slow us down or inflate the cost," Day said.

Earlier in the work, it was discovered that the floor joists in part of the building would have to be replaced at a cost of more than $100,000.

That work help put the project behind 30-45 days Day said. The latest projections of when the center will be open say sometime in early 2008, possibly February.

The project now has financing of a $4 million bond and the project is estimated to cost a little more than $3.5 million.

An increase in business license fees and lodging taxes are expected to pay the cost of the bond.
