Ferguson new THS principal
From Staff Reports

Kyle Ferguson
Even though there's been no public school board meeting held to hire the man, Kyle Ferguson is apparently the new principal of Thomasville High School.

According to a recent report in the Atmore News, Ferguson tendered his resignation at Escambia County High School to take the position here in Thomasville.

The position was vacated earlier this year after the school board transferred Brian Clayton from the position to principal at Thomasville Elementary School

Rather than take accept the transfer, Clayton resigned from the system after serving for one year.

Ferguson announced his resignation last week, leaving Escambia County after four years as assistant principal and two years as principal. His resignation is effective July 20.

Ferguson took the helm at the school after several years under then-principal Jerry Smith.

Under Ferguson's leadership, the school now has the highest graduation rate in Escambia County.

"We've enjoyed a lot of success," Ferguson said. "We've met all of our academic goals."

Ferguson pointed out that the teachers and students were able to accomplish those goals while also having the highest poverty rate at any Escambia County high school. He said having the academic success is a tribute to the type of students at ECHS.

Ferguson said he wasn't actively looking for another position, however two school systems contacted him. One of those school systems was the City of Thomasville.

"Over the last two weeks, I've been contacted by a couple of superintendents," Ferguson said. "I owed it to myself and my family to see what they had to offer."

Ferguson accepted the principal position at Thomasville High School. He described the opportunity as an offer he couldn't refuse. He turned down a position at Spanish Fort High School earlier in the year.

Ferguson said he loved working with the students at ECHS.

"I've developed some great relationships here," he said. "It has been great to see the school evolve. I'm convinced we have the best students in the state of Alabama at ECHS."

Ferguson's hiring is expected to be ratified at the Thomasville City School board meeting Thursday night.
