Chamber endorses wet vote

There's less than a month to go before the Aug. 14 alcohol vote in Thomasville.

The last day for voter registration was Tuesday and only voters within the city limits will be allowed to vote on the issue.

Adding its voice to the issue of alcohol sales this weeks was the Southwest Alabama Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber members were polled on the issue and supported the chamber coming out in favor of the vote by a margin of 2-1.

"We're here for the businesses of Thomasville and this is what they've told us to do," said Danny D'Andrea president of the chamber. "The chamber is an organization of businesses, for businesses, therefore, in order to determine if endorsing the issue was what the businesses wanted, the board made the decision to do an informal poll of it (paying) members to see, not if they were supportive, but if they felt the chamber should endorse the issue.

Of the 160 paying members at the time the poll was conducted 131, 82 percent, were reached, where a person with authority to speak for the business was able to respond.

Of those who responded, 73 said yes, they wanted the chamber to come out in support of the alcohol sales vote, and 37 said no. Twenty one member businesses said to take no stand in the issue.

Most notably, Rob Moore, station manager for member business WMBV was not reached during the phone polling. Moore has been an outspoken opponent of alcohol sales in Thomasville and spoke out in a large advertisement in this week's issue of The Thomasville Times.

Moore was out of the state and could not be reached for a comment when the chamber's statement was released.
