From the Editor's Desk
Races Speaking of interest and races, I still can't get interested in the presidential primary posturing - yet. But it's starting to get there. John McCain's campaign is sinking faster than the Bismark, and after a truly terrible start, John Edwards seems to be gaining some ground on the Democrat side. McCain's flop so far maybe shouldn't come as much of a surprise. I think it may come back to the one topic that everyone and no one likes to talk about when it comes to presidential elections - likability. I wonder just how often a voter's decision comes down to whether or not they think they actually like the guy. It's the same issue Hillary Clinton has to deal with in some way. At this point I wouldn't be at all surprised if it all came down to Fred Thompson and Barak Obama. And Thompson hasn't even officially announced. I do know that the attacks launched against him when the idea first came up mean there are a lot of folks scared of a Fred Thompson campaign. They're scared because it could be a winner. I've not mentioned Mitt Romney or Giuliani because, frankly, I can't come to terms with the prospects of either man's campaign. It seems like they stand equally good chances of taking off or crashing and burning. There's still a long way to go, and nothing's off the table yet. It may yet get a lot more interesting. Elections Speaking of elections, things are starting to shake around these parts as the vote on an alcohols sales referendum nears. There's less than three weeks to go and both sides seem to be gathering up their ammunition and readying themselves for a fight. In this week's issue, there's a pretty strong ad from Rob Moore and CAAST (Citizens Against Alcohol Sales in Thomasville). One source for the statistics cited in the ad caught my eye. It was called ALCAP. I'd never heard of this organization, though the acronym sounded vaguely governmental. I found out it stands for the Alabama Citizens Action Program, which appears to be an independent group, nothing affiliated with any governmental agaency, despite how it may sound. Now, let me be clear that I don't think there's anything sinister about that at all. Just thought you should know. I've tried to play referee in this debate when it comes to the pages of this publication, and I've tried to be as fair as possible and I've tried to explain my thoughts along the way. This is just another point along the road.
What we have said here all along is that this debate will come to an end soon, and we'll all have to get back to being neighbors once it's over. Let's not lose sight of that.
