Art exhibit draws record crowd The opening reception for the current show featured in The Exhibit at BWWMH drew a record crowd despite drizzling rain throughout the afternoon. A crowd estimated at 150+ braved the elements to view the photographic exhibit by Thomas Melton and his daughter, Catherine Melton Meador, on Sunday, July 8 in the hospital's main hall. Melton began taking photographs when he was a U.S. Marine stationed with his new wife, Kayte, in Quantico, Virginia and later at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Upon completion of his three years of active duty, he and his family returned to Demopolis where he worked for Gulf States Paper Corporation. During that time, his photography was limited mostly to taking photos of family members. In 2004 he joined his daughter, Catherine, in a photography class taught by Joe Turner offered by the University of West Alabama. Turner was the first photographer to be featured in The Exhibit. Their assignment for class each week was to take at least two rolls of film featuring still life, signage, rural and urban landscapes, and portraits. While Meador had taken photos of her children for the past twenty years, it was the class that she took with her father that ignited her love of photography. She now feels comfortable behind the lens of a camera and she constantly searches for that "great" photograph. Her photos have been published in area newspapers. She has exhibited with the Two Rivers Arts Council's Artists Showcase, The Sandwich Shop, Canebrake Craft Corner, The Grand Gallery, Guthrie's of Demopolis and the Art and Photography Exhibit at the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture in York.
A graduate of Demopolis High School, she received her Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from the University of Alabama and worked as a registered nurse for 15 years. She was a member of the BWWMH Board of Directors for 12 years, serving for several years as the chairman.
