DEAR DIANE
Weight worriers should shut up
By Diane Verhoeven

DEAR DIANE:

I am 33 years old, single and what some would call a "plus-size" woman. I am not morbidly obese, but I am curvy.

I love the way my body looks. I don't consider myself "plus-size." I am a classic, beautiful, Reubenesque lady, and I am tired of my friends and family and society hectoring me to lose weight.

Everyone tells me that I won't be able to find a man if I don't lose weight and look like those bony women I see in the magazines and tabloids. They all look like concentration camp survivors, in my opinion.

I am happy the way I am. I enjoy the foods I like; I exercise three times a week; and I go dancing on Friday nights. No, I haven't found Mr. Right, but then, I don't need a man to define me. If I happen to find the right man for me, that would be wonderful, but I don't sit at home wringing my hands and crying over the fact that I'm single and childless.

What should I do, Diane? Should I make everyone else happy and diet until I'm a size 0; or do I tell everyone to take a long walk off a short pier?

- PLEASANTLY PLUMP IN PEORIA

DEAR PEORIA:

If everything you've told me is true, then you sound like a wonderful woman who knows who she is and is comfortable in her own skin. I say, Hurrah for You!

Just because you are a few pounds heavier than the insurance companies and women's magazines want you to be doesn't mean you are Jabba the Hut and don't deserve True Love. That your friends and family try to bully you is horrible and rude. You aren't morbidly obese and your weight isn't preventing you from leading an active lifestyle, so why should they care?

The next time someone rudely comments about your weight, tell them to have a piece of pie and wash it down with a tall, frosty mug of Shut the Heck Up.
