CRUISIN' Q: Greg, we are owners of a 1973 AMC Ambassador Custom Brougham four-door sedan. It has been in our family since new. We belong to six car clubs and have attended every car show within 100 miles and have yet to see one. Would you please let us know how many were produced that year? - David and Maria B., Pennsauken, N.J. A: For some reason American Motors did not officially release production numbers for the Ambassador in 1973, but I can tell you what it built in 1972 and 1974 to give you a guideline. In 1972, AMC produced an estimated 15,000 Custom Brougham hardtops and sedans, both four-door models. In 1974, it produced 17,901 of the Ambassador Brougham model, again this number was estimated by AMC. By way of averaging, my best educated guess might be about 16,000 or so of 1973 four-door Brougham models. I personally owned a 1974 AMC Matador Sedan with the 304 V-8 that I used in business back in 1982. It had a similar body style to the Ambassador, with fewer bells and whistles. I actually traded two pinball machines for it, and yes, I wish I still had the Matador, and the pinball machines, both of which were late-1960s vintage! Hope this all helped, and have fun with your Ambassador.
