WCCATF sponsors "Classroom in the Woods"

The Wilcox County Chapter of the Alabama Treasure Forest sponsored several events during the Spring.

The Chapter observed Arbor Day by planting a tree at the Pine Hill Nutrition Center. During this event a class from F. S. Ervin presented an Arbor Day program. Mr. Paul Wingard so ably sponsors the Wilcox County Chapter. Mr. Wingard and Mrs. Steve Smith of the Wilcox County Forestry Department headed up the three tree give-aways (Pine Hill, Camden, and Pine Apple) in Wilcox County. Chapter members of the Wilcox County Treasure Forest assisted with tree giveaways.

Extension office personnel, Mr. John Ollisn and Mrs. Susan Thompson (Choctaw County), Mrs. Wendy Padgett (Clarke County and Mrs. Pam Stentz (Wilcox County) assisted with "Forest in the Classroom" (a Fall activity), "Classroom in the Forest" in the Spring and other related activities. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Lawler and Mr. James Lawler hosted the Wilcox Academy students at their farm in Camden. Another Forestry Department agent, Mrs. Madeline Watts Hildreth assisted them on this day.

Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo H. Purser, sponsored the classes from F. S. Ervin which are taught by Mrs. Wiggins, Mrs. Briggins and Mrs. Smith. These students traveled to Sunny South. Mrs. Ethel Parham and Mr. Bill Irby were among the community helpers at this site. Mrs. Shirley McClurkin's group from Thomasville participated in "Classroom in the Forest" on property in Wilcox County owned by Mrs. McClurkin.

Speaker for the Spring meeting held at the Auburn Experiment Station on Highway 28 was Mrs. Michelle Isenburg, a biologist who is employed by a chemical company. Her educational power point presentation on invasive species was enjoyed by the sizeable group.

The Alabama Treasure Forest Association and Wildlife/Forestry Festival will be held November 2- 3, 2007, Mobile. The conference will be hosted at the Riverview Hotel while the Wildlife/Forestry Festival will be on the grounds of the Heritage Homestead of James and Joan Malone, Chunchula.

Officers of the Wilcox County Treasure Forest Chapter are: president, Robbie Purser, vice-president, McDuffie Stallworth; secretary, Ellen Byrd; treasurers, Tommy and Janell Lawler.

Membership is open to anyone interested in preserving the family forests.
