Hankins coaches in all-star game
Hankins who has spent most of his time at Thomasville serving as the offensive coordinator in addition to his role as head coach, found himself on the other side of the ball in the All- Star game working with linebackers and serving as the team's defensive coordinator. In that role, he showed he still knows a little bit about the other side of the ball as well, with his South defensive squad pitching a shutout in the 10-0 win. Not only did his defensive charges blank their opponent but held them to 101 total yards of offense including only 36 yards rushing. In the complete domination by the South defense, the North offense was forced into two turnovers, suffered three quarterback sacks and managed only 2.3 yards gained per play. When asked about his participation in the event, Hankins had nothing but good things to say. "It was a great experience," the Thomasville Coach said. "The kids, in addition to being outstanding athletes, were class young men and a pleasure to coach. As for the coaches, you couldn't ask for a better group to work with. We had a great time all week working together." The 37 man South squad included; one player each from Abbeville, Auburn, Central of Hayneville, Foley, Greenville, Jackson, McGill Toolen, Murphy, Opelika, Stanhope Elmore, T. R. Miller, Verbena, and Washington County; two players from Andalusia, Central of Phenix City, Elmore County, Houston Academy, Robert E. Lee, and UMS-Wright; and three from Eufaula, Maplesville, Pike County, and Prattville. With All-Star week behind him Coach Hankins is focused again on his Thomasville Tigers and the start of fall football practice which is a little less than three weeks away now, beginning on August 6.
Leading up to that date Hankins and his staff will continue to oversee the team in their weight workouts and conditioning as well as participate in some seven on seven passing competitions. In that area the Tigers are scheduled to travel to Leroy on Tuesday, July 24, for a seven on seven competition before hosting one in Thomasville on Tuesday, July 31, that will include visiting squads from Demopolis, Leroy, and Linden. One other such event has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, August 1, with Thomasville slated to join Carver of Birmingham in a competition hosted by Vestavia Hills.
