Right to wait before sex DEAR DIANE: You said the right thing in a recent column to "Virgin in Virginia" - but didn't go nearly far enough. You were responding to his concern about losing his virginity as a response to peer pressure. You might have added that by abstaining or postponing his first experience, he would also be avoiding a range of STDs and the risk of unintended fatherhood. You might have mentioned that in simply seeking a willing partner for "doing the deed," as he put it, he was cheapening the girl who would be his partner, his future wife and himself. STDs, prior casual experience and child-support payments don't make great wedding gifts for the woman he will eventually love enough to marry. We hear a lot about a woman's right to make choices for her body and herself. As a society we need to recognize that one of the most important choices a woman should be able to make for herself is to be respected as a future wife and mother, not simply as a means for some boy to keep up with his teenaged "joneses." When the lad in Virginia learns to properly respect women and himself, then he'll be grown-up enough to call himself a Man. Thanks for listening. - HOLLY, VIA E-MAIL DEAR HOLLY: Thanks for writing.
