Thomasville's Lions Glenda Prescott and Jo Wood attended the 90th International Lions Club Convention held in Chicago. The International Convention returned to Chicago where, in 1917, Chicago business leader Melvin Jones founded the international service organization.

Each year 15,000-20,000 Lions club members and their families from more than 100 countries gather for the Lions Clubs International Convention. For five days, Lions conduct association business, share fellowship and enjoy the sights of an international city. The Lions Clubs International Convention is one of the largest annual conventions of its kind in the world.

Among the highlights of the convention was a spectacular Parade of Nations featuring 9,000 Lions from 100 countries, many in native dress, who marched along with floats and 25 marching bands. Attendees heard Texas native Jimmy Ross, International President, deliver the keynote address. In addition, the 2007 Lions Humanitarian Award was presented to Timothy P. Shriver, Ph.D. Shriver is the Chairperson of Special Olympics, Inc., and serves 2.5 million athletes and their families in more than 160 countries. Previous recipients include Mother Teresa and former U.S President Jimmy Carter.

Convention delegates learned about important issues facing communities around the world, elected international officers, and voted on constitutional amendments. The United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, was the setting for plenary sessions and the entertainment line-up. Delegates were treated to performances by Glen Campbell and Ronnie Milsap. Former President Jimmy Carter spoke at the closing plenary session.

Prescott and Wood attended a White Sox game, visited the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Observatory. They also enjoyed an architectural tour on the Chicago River.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with nearly 1.35 million members in approximately 45,000 dubs in 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world.
