World Series recap - Monday's games Mississippi 8 - Virginia 2 On day three of the series Mississippi and Virginia found themselves once again in a battle for survival. Although Virginia took an early 1-0 lead, from the third inning on it was all Mississippi as they scored three in the third and five more over the course of the game to claim an 8-2 victory. Chris Caves who started on the mound for Mississippi was credited with the win going 4 2/3 innings in which he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Vito Pema finished the game striking out three over the final 2 1/3 innings. At the plate Brandon Holley, Colby Reeves and Scott Rowland led the charge in an 11 hit attack for the boys from Laurel County with two hits apiece. Brandon Bailey, Catfish Gainey, Tyler Fall, Brett Moss and Andrew pierce added one each to the cause. Gary Crawford and Kevin Wade both pulled mound duty in the game for the boys from Appomattox with Crawford the starter getting charged with the loss. During five innings he allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks. On offense Matt Roach and Chad Wisecarver both had two hits and Sam Calohan had one for Virginia in a losing effort. Louisiana 14 - Georgia 4 In a game that had see-sawed back and forth over the first four innings, Louisiana broke out in the fifth and sixth innings to score nine runs and to defeat a good Georgia team 14-4. With the loss Georgia, who many predicted would be in the thick of things at the end, made an early exit from the series while Louisiana stayed alive with a 2 and 1 record. Philip Menou, who pitched the final three innings of the game in relief of starter Hunter Estay, was credited with the win. During his time on the mound he shut out Georgia giving up one hit and three walks while striking out four. The Louisiana offense which got hot late in the game picked up 14 hits led by two hit performances from Skylar Barrentine, Grant Cox, Hunter Estay, Andrew LaFosse and Chase Joubert. Joining them in the hit parade with one hit were; Adam Babineaux, Steven Gauthreaux, Philip Menou, and Tyler Theriot. Matt Robinson, who started for Georgia and pitched 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Josh Fields and Ethan Seagraves for 1/3 inning each, was charged with the loss. On offense Georgia got five hits with Chris Beck, Jake Fields, Patrick Jensen, Seddrick Mayfield and Will Wilcox all picking up one. The offensive highlight for Georgia was the long homerun hit by Josh Fields, the first and only one recorded to date in the World Series. Florida 9 - Texas 8 In the final game on the schedule for day three of the tournament, undefeated Florida took on undefeated Texas in the prime time game. When all was said and done Florida emerged with a 9-8 win parlaying seven hits and five Texas errors into a one-point victory. Brandon Patterson who was sandwiched between Daniel Rockhold and Drew Hutchinson picked up the win on the mound for Florida allowing one run on three hits and six walks while striking out three in five innings of work. Drew Hutchinson came on for the final out to pick up his second save in the series. On offense Matt Jones with three hits and Drew Hutchinson with two had the hot sticks for Florida with Joey Gillen and Josh Lucas adding one hit each to the total. For Texas it was Timothy Boaze on in relief of starter Trace DeBerry who was tagged with the loss allowing five runs on one hit, four walks and one hit batsman while striking out one in three innings.
At the plate the Texas offense recorded 11 hits in a losing effort. They were led by Andrew Ector with three hits followed by Trace DeBerry and Chris Dudley with two hits each and Timothy Boaze, Steven McBride, Will Mixon and Trevor Moon with one apiece.
