Countdown to wet vote begins
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with two polling places open: fire station #3 on Bashi Road and the National Guard Amory on Hwy. 43 South. The vote is only open to registered voters living within the Thomasville city limits. City Clerk Debbie Ballard said there were approximately 2,860 registered voters on the voter list by Tuesday afternoon, and that number was not expected to change significantly before the vote. When arriving to vote, voters should bring some form of photo identification to the polls, Ballard recommended. Both sides of the wet-dry debate in Thomasville have recently stepped up their efforts in getting their messages out to the public. The dry side is focusing on the dangers of alcohol consumption and the idea that the alcohol ordinance could be changed in the future without a vote of the public. The underlying idea of the ordinance message is that future changes to the ordinance could make it less stringent and therefore present a greater danger to the community.
Thomasville's CAAST (Citizens Against Alcohol Sales in Thomasville) finished filing its political action committee papers with the county last week. The paperwork shows the area's Baptist churches to be the largest donors. The group's July 27 financial report shows $10,959 in itemized cash contributions and $2,892 in unitemized contributions (contributions of $100 or less). In-kind contributions totaled $2,248 and expenditures of $7,743.
If Thomasville does go wet, it will join a small list of cities that are wet within dry counties in Alabama including: Albertville - Marshall County; Athens - Limestone County; Clanton - Chilton County; Enterprise - Coffee County; Scottsboro - Jackson County; Florence - Lauderdale County; Ft. Payne - De Kalb County; Guntersville - Marshall County; Decatur - Morgan County; Jasper - Walker County; Bridgeport - Jackson County; Elba - Coffee County; Stevenson - Jackson County; Jackson - Clarke County; Cedar Bluff - Cherokee County, and Monroeville - Monroe County.
