Fulton Baptist returns from mission trip near Mexico border
Most of these precious people live in utter poverty. The land was dry and desolate and there was a sense of hopelessness that hung over the O'Odham people. They are actually called "a forgotten people". We had to keep reminding ourselves that we were still in the U.S. because it was like being in a third world country. We taught VBS each morning in Choulic and Cowlic, two of the villages on the reservation. We were about 6-10 miles from the Mexican border. Each night, we set up in the local grocery store parking lot for a crusade that featured music, testimonies and preaching.
Joe Clayton, Ben Pugh, Winston Parden, Clarence Newton, Windell Sheffield, Robert Dement, Frank Jackson, Ralph Smyly, John Wayne Overstreet and John Reaves. Others from the team gave out Gospel tracts and did one on one witnessing. Gang activity was very prevalent on the reservation.(There were 29 different gangs on the reservation). Opportunities were everywhere for sharing The Gospel, even with gang members. We concluded the week by having baptism Friday night for those who had repented and received Jesus as their Savior during the week. It was an awesome time of rejoicing as many were saved and baptized, including several gang members. Even though we saw extreme poverty, experienced intense spiritual warfare and overcame fears of being out of comfort zones, we also saw God work in the hearts of people, felt God's awesome power and saw God change lives forever.
Whether across the world, across the U.S. or across the street, God is calling every true Christian to be bold in sharing Jesus and the salvation that He offers.
