From the Editor's Desk
Thomasville on the web
Arthur McLean
Well, I'm glad that's over. Maybe we'll be able to get back to normal soon.

We received a lot of letters to the editor over the past two weeks, and I'd like to apologize to the two writers whose letters didn't make it in print. Some of that was due to space constraints in the paper, and some of it was simply my fault in letting a couple of letters slide to the wrong side of the desk. As you can see, there were still many letters in the paper these past two weeks.

I guess one of the surprising things over the course of tackling this issue in the paper was the relative lack of letters we received over the months preceeding the vote. I really expected a steady stream of one or two a week, but that never really materialized.

There were three letters that never made it to print because the writers wanted to remain anonymous. That goes against our policy here, so those were not published.

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to write. I've always felt that letters to the editor help make a good community newspaper. I'd like to encourage all our readers to write to us about topics that interest or concern you. I remember the first little newspaper I worked for received quite a few letters. Every week we'd publish four to five. Wouldn't mind seeing that here.

He didn't say it

There's a popular quote I've heard over the years that claims Benjamin Franklin said that beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy. The alcohol debate here kept bringing that quote to my mind. Well, I decided to look into it further and found that other, better researchers had already tackled the problem. While it's quite a quip and sounds like something he might have said, research pretty clearly indicates that Franklin never said or wrote such a thing.

On Yahoo!

Thomasville made the headlines on the search engine - web portal Yahoo! This week in a roundabout kind of way. The story was actually about Athens and its vote to go back to being dry, but the story also mentioned Thomasville from what I'm told.

Less than kind

Some other folks found out about Thomasville's wet/dry issue on the internet last week. Apparently, someone sent a link to the letters section on our web site to a headline aggregator on the web. The comments posted to that site were not very kind to Thomasville. And I received a couple of pointed emails that were far from charitable about our fair city. What was it that comedian said? Sometimes you wish ignorance was painful?
