THS tradition room reaches 140 names
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Tradition Room in the Thomasville High School Football Complex continues to move in the direction that was originally envisioned by Coach Jack Hankins and the Thomasville Quarterback Club almost three years ago. Besides the many donated pictures and other memorabilia that have become part of the growing collection housed in the space set aside for the Tradition Room, the number of individual plaques purchased to recognize and honor those who have been a part of the Thomasville High School Football program during its 90 year history has reached 140 with others on order.

As it was at the last update there are plaques in that number representing every decade of Thomasville Tiger Football except the period 1916- 1919. The decade beginning with the year 2000 continues to be the leader with some 38 plaques now on display or on order. The decades of the 1990's and 1980's are next with 23 and 20 respectively. With a 90% increase from this time last year the decade of the 1960's has taken over the fourth spot with 19, surpassing the 1970's which now has 15. Beyond that, the 1950's have 10; the 1940' have eight; the 1920's have four; and the 1930' three.

This time last year there were three families with plaques representing three generations of honorees and three families with plaques for two generations. Those numbers have now risen to five families in the three generation category and eight in those with two generations represented. Within those numbers there are 17 father and son combinations and three that involve a grandfather and a grandson. As far as brothers go, there are now 20 sets of brothers who have been recognized with plaques.

Although there has continued to be a steady growth over the past three years in the number of former Tigers wishing to have their names included on a plaque, there are still a great many more who for one reason or another have not availed themselves of this opportunity. As was discovered at several of the class reunions that were held this past year, many of those who might well be interested in such a program simply did not know about it or did not know exactly how to go about getting a plaque.

With that in mind the Thomasville Quarterback Club and Coach Jack Hankins want to get the word out to all those who ever wore the maroon and gray and who, by virtue of that, are considered to be a part of Thomasville High School Football Family.

If you aren't currently represented by a plaque or you know a family member or even a teammate who aren't, you can solve that problem by contacting Coach Jack Hankins, the Thomasville High School office or members of the Thomasville Quarterback Club for an order form. The cost is $30.00 which covers the cost of the plaque being made. Any proceeds from the plaques above the cost of manufacturing and shipping will be used to support the current THS Football Program.

There are still literally hundreds of former Thomasville Tigers who need to be remembered and celebrated for what they contributed to the storied history of Thomasville High School Football. The bottom line goal for this project is to see that all of them get the recognition they deserve by having a personal plaque in the Tradition Room. Once that has been done the dream Coach Hankins and the Thomasville Quarterback Club had three years ago will become a reality.
