News and views from the pits
RACING By Greg Zyla
At the United Racing Club event held at Selinsgrove, Pa.'s ultra quick half-mile, originally designed by Joie Chitwood, we had time to chat with former sprint-car champion Kramer Williamson. Williamson, who led the 25- lap feature for 24 3/4 laps only to be passed by first-time URC winner Joey Biasi coming off Turn 4 for the checkered, said his 24-year-old son, Kurt, is now working for Kyle Petty's team doing shock absorbers. Kurt used to work for Penske Shocks, and I remember back in 1986 I visited Williamson's shop in Palmyra, Pa., while doing a feature for "Circle Track" magazine on "The Pink Panther," and there was 4- year-old Kurt running around a small dirt track in the family backyard in a go-kart-style midget racer. My how time flies, as Kurt is little no more. Good luck at Petty Enterprises!

Nostalgia Drag Racing is more popular than ever, as the 2007 York U.S. 30 Nostalgia Reunion held in York, Pa., and Beaver Springs Dragway near Lewistown, Pa., was a huge success. The on-track portion of the event was held at Beaver Springs and drew more than 400 cars. Big names from the past included Bruce Larson, Bud Faubel, "Ohio" George Montgomery, Joe Jocono, Ken Montgomery, Bob Harrop, Linda Vaughan, "Jungle Pam" Hardy, Judy Lilly, Wally Bell and many more. Faubel, dressed in a bright blue blazer, tie and white pants with polished shoes, was offered a chance by Bob Goss, the owner of his former 1964 Hemi "The Honker," to "drive" it down the track.

Unbeknownst to all, the car had some transmission woes and didn't have a high gear. Faubel, with his wife in the passenger seat, nailed the "Honker" at the start and took off on what looked to be a full-bore pass. With the car smoking heavily by halftrack, owner Goss, who bought the car from Faubel in 1965 for $3,500, no doubt was cringing as the now 78- year-old Faubel finally lifted just before the finish. He still ran in the high 11's.

Kyle Busch is a hot property as recent talk over NASCAR way is whom Kyle will sign with. Will it be Roush-Fenway? Ganassi? Evernham? Not in this book. I'll go with either Childress or Joe Gibbs, as chatter of J.J. Yeley's "removal" from the No. 18 may be true. And speaking of Ray Evernham, word is leaking out that he will sell his Dodge team lock, stock and barrel and then become crew chief (either with the new owner or elsewhere) or team up with a bigname partner, like Jack Roush did. Thus far, '07 has been very disappointing for Evernham.

Other talk centers on nice guy Joe Nemecheck losing his ride as Ginn Racing shuts down the No. 13 team due to lack of sponsorship, and Sterling Marlin being fired and replaced with rookie Regan Smith, who was sharing the Army ride with Mark Martin. Notable too is Aric Aimirola's bid goodbye to Joe Gibbs and signing with Ginn, in a share program for Cup racing with Martin in the Army car. Aimirola's move is all fallout from his being removed from driving the Busch car he "won" with under a yellow flag by latearriving Denny Hamlin, the team's regular driver.

That's it for this week.
