Jennifer Henson has returned from her three-week experience attending Lions Club International Youth Camp in Hawaii. She represented the entire United States and was chosen to go by winning the Outstanding Camper Award at Camp Chandler near Montgomery. She was one of 24 young students from 14 different countries selected to go and the only one selected from the entire United States. The purpose of the conference is to give high school students an opportunity to strengthen their leadership, organization and service skills, to build relationships, and to network with other leaders and youth. The goal of the conference is to encourage, motivate, and empower youth to return to their communities as advocates for positive change and service.

Jennifer addressed our local Lions Club at the last meeting and gave a most informative and enjoyable presentation. She said she was the only one of the 24 delegates there that only spoke one language and most of them spoke 4 or 5. The students stayed with host families and she was extremely pleased with the way the entire conference was organized and carried out. Her favorite part was when each of the participants had to cook and prepare a meal from their native area. She said most of them replied they did not normally eat like we Southerners do! They have very light meals and nothing fried! She prepared homemade peach cobbler and banana pudding.

A few highlights of the places they visited were Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Diamond Head (mountain), Haleakala (mountain), craters, lava tubes, and aquariums.

Lions are hoping to encourage other young people to apply for the Leadership Conference held every spring at Camp Chandler near Montgomery. The boys' camp had to be cancelled this year due to lack of young people applying. Of all the participants in the girls' camp, our own Jennifer Henson was selected as the "top camper". Please see any Lions member to ask about this camp and this opportunity or to become active in our local Leo Club (Lions for high school age members) with Mrs. Shirley Wallace as leader. Remember, Lions is the largest service club in the world and our motto is "We Serve".
